Glass...ready and waiting

Marbles.jpg
Picked up some cool glass marbles the other day. Moon Marble Co. is a super cool local shop that sells all kinds of marbles, toys, games and other interesting stuff. Plus, they have a working art glass studio where folks can watch the artisans making gorgeous glass creations. The marbles will be used as eyes for some bug sculptures I'll be working on the next couple of weeks.

Sculpture in the snow

BottleTreeSnow.jpg
A beautiful snow fell last night. This morning many of the sculptures in the garden were crowned with a fluffy cap of snow. The bottle tree flowers look especially good, with their color rebounding off the white environment.

Cold steel

Okay...today the weather changed. So much for pleasant conditions in the shop. A big-time cold wave moved in early this morning. The high today is only in the 20s. These are the days when I love to fire up the forge and fill my workshop with heat. But the projects I am finishing just need tweaking. So, no fire and no hammers.

Inside the shop

So where does all this metal stuff get created?

This photo shows a portion of my shop: Fossil Forge.

I use a couple of different forges (coal and gas) to work metal. I mostly use the gas forge, 'cause its quick and easy, but the sound and smell of a coal forge is hard to match.

The anvil I use weighs about 110 lbs. It's fastened to an old truck wheel, which makes it easy to move around the shop.

A basic plasma cutter helps cut out designs in the steel. I put it all together with a Mig welder and an assortment of other fasteners.

Most of my workspace is crowded with stuff and objects that might someday become part of a sculpture. Thanks for looking.

Busy weekend ahead

It's raining outside...a good day to be hammering metal. But I need to polish the website and add some photos to the gallery. Looking ahead, I have several sculptures to make this weekend. I am expecting a delivery from MegaGlass.com in the next couple of days. They offer a variety of recycled glass objects that are cool to mix with metal.

Welcome to Fossil Forge!

Fossil Forge is a studio specializing in metal sculpture, ornaments, gates and fences. Come back soon to check out photos and stories about projects I am working on. Thanks and enjoy!
